Here are the details as provided by HFD:

Hiawatha Fire crews were dispatched to 195 Pirie Drive in Hiawatha for a building fire at 4 p.m. today. This is a four-unit apartment building.

Arriving crews found the front entrance area of the building on fire. The fire was brought under control in about 10 minutes. All four apartment units sustained smoke damage, with two of the apartments having structural damage.

A total of four people occupy the building. Three were home at the time of the fire. One person jumped from a bedroom window to escape. Two other occupants escaped out the front door. One person was transported to Mercy Medical Center for evaluation. The Red Cross is assisting.

The fire appears to have started in a planter on the exterior of the building, which was being used for cigarette disposal.
